Abstract:
The chemistry of the nucleation process for R CrB stars is investigated and the chemical pathway to large carbon clusters is outlined for hydrogen poor and one hydrogen rich R CrB star. Based on the chemistry, the thermodynamical conditions of effective dust formation are discussed. Finally the dilemma between the requirement of a low condensation temperature of about 1500K and the empirical evidence for dust formation very close to the hot photospheres has been examined.
