Summer School “Exoplanets: Understanding alien worlds in diverse environments” is now ready for students to apply.

The next summer school in Alpbach, Tirol, Austria will take place from the 11th to 20th of July 2023. The topic of the school  is “Exoplanets: Understanding alien worlds in diverse environments”.

The summer school in Alpbach deals with aerospace and space research and offers students the opportunity to continue their education intensively for two weeks. The participants will work in four competing teams on mission studies on specific topics. Experts will give lectures on relevant topics and experienced tutors will supervise the teams. The results achieved will then be presented by the teams and should also be published.

We are hereby pleased to announce that the Summer School (www.summerschoolalpbach.at) is now ready for students to apply.

The Summer School is open to 60 selected young science and/or engineering students and graduates from among the member, associate and cooperating states of the European Space Agency (ESA). They need to be citizens of one of these states to be eligible for financial support by the relevant national sponsoring agencies or universities. Applicants with German citizenship who live in Germany or abroad, as well as citizens of ESA member states who currently live in Germany, can apply to participate with the support of the DLR Space Agency. The Agency will support a maximum of eight selected applicants reimbursing the participation fee and the costs of accommodation after participation in the summer school upon presentation of the receipts. Travel expenses and meals are not covered by the Space Agency. The point of contact at the Agency is Dr. Alessandra Roy (alessandra.roy(at)dlr.de).

Students will be requested to only submit applications online using the school webpage until February 28, 2023. After the application deadline, an internal DLR jury will select the applicants who appear suitable. The successful applicants will be informed by the end of April 2023. Applicants who are not selected have no opportunity to participate and are not entitled to financial support.

The registration fee charged from students will be € 450 and will cover working material, free access to copying, computer, e-mail and internet facilities at the School House, free coffee and dinner vouchers (including one free drink per evening) for the entire period of the Summer School including the weekend.

Travel and accommodation costs are not included in the registration fee. The costs for bed & breakfast accommodation in Alpbach amount to about € 60,- per person, per night in private houses. A stay of 11 nights is essential for all participants. All student accommodation will be arranged by Austrian Research Promotion Agency (https://www.ffg.at/en) and they will contact the selected students.

Students will have to pay all lodging expenses when they leave Alpbach  and will have to seek refund from national sources.
