Exoplanets in Sonneberg

Among the snow-covered landscape and between fog-shrouded mountain tops around Sonneberg, on 30th November SPP 1992 outreach coordinator Ludwig Scheibe held outreach talks, introducing the search for and exploration of extrasolar planets to school students of grade 9&10.

The event was organized by the Sonneberg observatory and the astronomical museum as part of the project „MINT-SON“, designed to interest young people in subjects related to science and technology.

In his talk, Ludwig showed several methods of finding exoplanets and talked about some of the diverse and amazing discoveries that were made in the 30 years this field has been around. Also a topic was the subject of habitability, and of course showing a couple of past, present and future campaigns in the field of exoplanets.

The two talks were held in front of roughly 150 students from local schools and the audience showed a lively interest in exoplanets, astronomy and the possibility of life. It was a great success in bringing the science of exoplanets to the next generation, and in forging relations to other astronomy-related outreach projects.
