Extragalactic Astrophysics and Cosmology

Content:

Starting from the local Universe we will work our way up to cosmological scales. Firstly we will consider the structure, kinematics, and possible origin of our Milky Way. Then we will enter the world of the Galaxy, where we will study scaling relations, luminosity functions and Galaxy development. Both the common features as well as the differences between the various types of active Galaxy (and their cores) will be examined. Topics such as Galaxy Clusters, Galaxy Groups and their building blocks (dark matter including baryonic dark matter), as well as scaling relations and developmental effects, together build up a comprehensive picture of this topic. In the cosmological part of of this lecture series, we will discuss the homogeneous isotropic cosmological model, inhomogeneities in the Universe and determination of the cosmological parameters.
